Zijing Yu is a Ph.D. student in the program of Film and Media Studies at Yale University. His research project in cinema’s silent to sound transition has its roots in a long-standing fascination with intertitles, subtitles, and many other forms of written language on screen. At Yale, he hopes to better understand cinema’s complicity in linguistic imperialism especially at critical stages of socialist and post-socialist state-building, as well as to explore innovative strategies to counteract it from within and without. His other interests include antiquity on screen, disabled spectatorship, and the globalized economy and ecology of queer media.
