The Miseducation: Learning as a Tool for Social Justice

For too long, education has been used as a weapon against us—misnaming, misframing, and misrepresenting Black lives. Miseducation tells us what we cannot be, what we should forget, what we are not meant to imagine. But out of that distortion comes resistance. Out of erasure comes creation.

This year’s BSC theme flips the script: we refuse miseducation as an ending, and instead claim learning as a practice of freedom. To study is to struggle, but also to dream. To read, write, teach, and question is to build the tools we need for justice. Whether in classrooms, community spaces, or our everyday lives, Black learning has always been an act of defiance and an act of love.

We come together in 2026 to honor that tradition—to examine how education has been denied, to unlearn the lies, and to embrace study as a pathway toward liberation. The miseducation is real, but so is our power to transform it.
