Raphael Tandler

Areas of Interest: Literary and film theory; aesthetics and art criticism; psychoanalysis; philosophy of the 20th century; German and North American literature of the long 20th century; Hollywood and European cinema; early film, with a focus on Weimar Germany.

Biography: Raphael Tandler is a PhD student in the combined program German and Film & Media Studies. Before coming to Yale in 2023, he studied literature, film, and philosophy in Zurich, Southampton, and New York. In his dissertation, supervised by Fatima Naqvi and John Durham Peters, he investigates the objects in F. W. Murnau’s films, with a focus on how they change in shape and meaning from the source text, script, and set design to their various filmic forms.
