Please join us for the last installment of Rough Cut for the fall semester on Wednesday, December 3 at 5:30pm in HQ 134. We will be joined by Julian Posada, Assistant Professor of American Studies at Yale, who will discuss his current book projects which focuses on AI data work in Latin America.

His book, under contract with the University of California Press, investigates the interplay between human labor and data production in the AI industry with a focus on Latin American data work and the emergence of digital platforms as infrastructures that facilitate extractivism in the region.

Julian Posada is an Assistant Professor of American Studies at Yale University and a Just Tech Fellow at the Social Science Research Council. His research centers on the social and cultural dimensions of information, with a particular emphasis on the relationship between labor and the development of artificial intelligence.

Julian’s academic articles have been published in journals including Big Data & Society, Information, Communication & Society, Frontiers in Artificial Intelligence, and the Proceedings of the ACM on Human-Computer Interaction. His research and commentary have appeared in media outlets including The Economist, Fortune, WIRED, the MIT Tech Review, and NBC. Julian’s research has been supported by the International Development Research Centre and the Social Science Research Council, with funding from the McArthur, Ford, and Surdna foundations. He holds a Ph.D. in Information Science from the University of Toronto and has held visiting appointments at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Weizenbaum Institute.
